A Global Ode to Innovation, Inclusion and Women’s Voices
By Manu Shrivastava
This November, as the winds of change sweep through Goa, the 56th International Film Festival of India unfurls a cinematic saga that is bigger, bolder, and richer than ever before. Over 240 films from 81 countries will light up the screens, with festival organisers boasting a record-shattering 2,314 submissions spanning 127 nations—a clear signal that IFFI’s global magnetism is at an all-time high.
From the blue-green heart of Brazil emerges the festival’s opening salvo, Gabriel Mascaro’s sci-fi-fantasy epic “The Blue Trail.” Winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale, the film follows Teresa, a septuagenarian whose Amazonian voyage becomes a gentle rallying cry for freedom and dreaming—proving that stories, much like rivers, know no boundaries.

Innovation runs deep this year, championed by Union Minister Dr. L. Murugan, who underscored the festival’s new initiatives embracing tech, inclusivity, and the spirit of Nari Shakti. More than 50 films by women directors will grace the festival, a living testament to cinema’s power to elevate and unite. The OTT content awards return, shining a spotlight on India’s vibrant web series ecosystem and the creators shaping its narrative arc.
Indian cinema’s global star is clearly on the rise, with local releases now outselling Hollywood counterparts in places as far afield as Australia. Secretary Sanjay Jaju announced fresh collaborations with Japan, Spain, and Australia, and celebrated the expansion of the Film Bazaar, now pulsing with international co-producers, delegates, and tech innovators. Expect a grand carnival parade echoing the festival’s symphony of creativity, and a larger-than-life “IFFIesta” extravaganza fusing music, food, art, and interaction, all designed to pull youth and community into the festival’s welcoming embrace.
Generative AI is the latest disruptor and muse, but Festival Director Shekhar Kapur calls for technology to be folded into the craft, seeing it not as threat but as ally, helping storytellers reach new shores. The Waves Film Bazaar, now in its 19th edition, will connect more than 300 projects to global financiers and distributors; this is where future classics will find their wings.
Across the festival’s kaleidoscopic sections—the international competition, Asian and world cinema, “Macabre Dreams,” “Docu-Montage,” UNICEF, and restored classics—audiences will discover more than just films. With Japan saluted as this year’s country of focus, six handpicked titles trace the arc of Japanese creativity, spanning drama, sci-fi, thrillers, and poetic experiments.

Tributes ring out for legendary filmmakers, including Guru Dutt and Salil Chowdhury, whose masterpieces “Musafir” and “Subarnarekha” draw us back to the centennial roots of Indian cinema’s golden age. The Indian Panorama shines its own spotlight, with “Amaran” (Tamil) and “Kakori” opening the feature and non-feature categories respectively, while “New Horizons” presents up to five premieres from rising stars.
Inclusivity reigns, with thoughtful accessibility measures—audio descriptions, sign language, and multilingual dubbing—at all five venues. Miramar and Anjuna beaches add open-air magic, as masterclasses and panels bring cinematic heavyweights like Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Anupam Kher, Aamir Khan, and Ravi Varman to centre stage. Debut directors, emerging craftspeople, and web creators are showered with prizes and recognition, as the “Creative Minds of Tomorrow” platform swells to 124 select participants across 13 filmmaking crafts.
This year, IFFI opens its arms wide to celebrate voices that are often just beginning to be heard. Over fifty films directed by women take their rightful place on the international stage, alongside more than fifty works from debut filmmakers, a clear signal that the festival is committed not just to cinema, but to inclusivity, to fresh perspectives, to stories that pulse with the energy of new vision.
The Best Debut Director award for Indian feature films will spotlight five carefully selected first-time ventures, each screening a promise, a spark. The accolade comes with both recognition and reward — a certificate and a cash prize of five lakh rupees, a tangible affirmation of talent meeting opportunity.
The festival promises a showcase of cinema that has already captured the world’s attention, bringing to Goa a constellation of films celebrated on the grandest stages of global filmmaking. Titles that triumphed at Cannes, Berlinale, Locarno, and Venice will find a home here, reaffirming IFFI as a true international crossroads for extraordinary storytelling. Among the luminaries are It Was Just An Accident, winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes; Father Mother Sister Brother, recipient of the Golden Lion in Venice; and Dreams (Sex Love), honored with the Golden Bear in Berlin.

Cannes returns with Sirât, recipient of the Grand Jury Prize, while Berlin adds The Message, the Silver Bear Jury Prize winner, to the line-up. Audiences can also experience No Other Choice, the People’s Choice Award at TIFF, Gloaming in Luomu, Best Film at Busan, and Fiume o Morte!, Tiger Award winner at IFFR, among others. Together, these films chart a journey across continents, languages, and perspectives, underlining IFFI’s enduring role as a global meeting point for excellence in cinema.
And now, the marketplace is more vibrant than ever, with cash grants and co-production opportunities, tech pavilions awash in the latest VFX wizardry, and film lovers invited to deep-dive into conversations spanning editing, acting, the power of theatre, and the role of AI in artistic creation.
The 56th IFFI is more than a festival—it’s a movement, a mosaic of stories, dreams, and innovations, all harmonising in Goa’s November glow. From world premieres and carnival parades to generative AI and golden jubilees, IFFI 2025 is where the future of storytelling meets the soul of cinema.
