India's digital heritage revolution arrives nearly a decade late. Even more troubling, it risks overshadowing discoveries at Gharapuri that could redefine the nation's maritime history, writes Gajanan Khergamker


The Archaeological Survey of India has once again demonstrated an extraordinary talent for mistaking administrative housekeeping for institutional achievement. At a moment when the excavations at Gharapuri are yielding evidence capable of fundamentally enriching the understanding of India's maritime past, with indications of a flourishing maritime civilisation dating to around 500 AD that places the island within a sophisticated network of trade and cultural exchange centuries before the Portuguese sailed into these waters, the institution has chosen to amplify a technological measure that should have been routine years ago. Presenting the integration of a navigation platform to boast as a noteworthy accomplishment only underscores how profoundly disconnected the official narrative has become from the archaeological significance unfolding on the ground.

The greater irony lies in the continued institutional acceptance of the colonial appellation 'Elephanta', a name bestowed by the Portuguese after a chance encounter with a stone elephant near the island's foothills. Every repetition of that label distances the site from its civilisational identity as Gharapuri and perpetuates a colonial shorthand that has long outlived its historical relevance. The archaeological discoveries emerging from the island deserve to occupy the centre of public discourse because they possess the potential to recast India's place within the history of maritime commerce, navigation, settlement and cultural interaction across the Indian Ocean. Those discoveries enrich the national narrative and invite global scholarly attention.

Institutional priorities are revealed by what they choose to celebrate. Elevating a belated digital convenience into a headline while relegating discoveries of genuine historical consequence to the margins represents a profound failure of cultural stewardship. Technology serves heritage but cannot substitute for it. The enduring achievement of Gharapuri will never be a navigation application. It will be the archaeological evidence that compels historians to reconsider established assumptions about India's maritime antiquity and restores one of the country's most remarkable heritage landscapes to the prominence it has deserved for centuries.

Yet, the Archaeological Survey of India's latest announcement at Maharashtra's Bhuleshwar Temple following a string of others does deserves recognition. It reflects a growing institutional willingness to move beyond static signboards and introduce visitors to QR-enabled, GPS-supported digital storytelling. It also demonstrates that heritage interpretation is beginning to receive the same technological attention as conservation. For thousands of domestic tourists visiting remote monuments, the initiative promises an experience that is richer, more structured and considerably more informative than wandering through centuries of history with nothing more than a fading information plaque.

Viewed through an international lens, however, Bhuleshwar also illustrates a more sobering reality. The technology being celebrated as a breakthrough in India represents a model that many of the world's leading museums had already begun replacing years ago. The QR-code audio guide, revolutionary during the previous decade, has steadily evolved elsewhere into intelligent, personalised and conversational heritage ecosystems driven by artificial intelligence, spatial computing and computer vision. India's digital heritage journey has finally reached an important milestone. The destination itself continues to lie some distance ahead.

The ASI Mumbai Circle's programme is technically impressive within the Indian public heritage context. Visitors scan a QR code, download the guide, and receive GPS-triggered narration while walking through the monument. Audio can even be stored temporarily for offline use, making the system practical for remote archaeological sites with unreliable connectivity. The content is researched internally by ASI scholars and professionally recorded before being integrated into the digital platform developed with GunjIndia. Similar systems have already been introduced at Kuda Caves, Lohagad Fort, Naneghat, Pataleshwar and several other protected monuments across Maharashtra.
The question confronting policymakers therefore is no longer whether India should digitise heritage. That debate has already been settled. The more urgent question concerns whether India is investing in yesterday's digital architecture while the rest of the cultural world redesigns the visitor experience around technologies that barely existed when QR codes first entered museums.
During the early 2010s, QR codes represented liberation. Museums escaped expensive proprietary audio handsets, charging stations and maintenance contracts by shifting interpretation onto visitors' smartphones. The BYOD model fundamentally changed museum economics. Today, however, the smartphone itself is becoming only one interface among many. Increasingly, visitors point their cameras directly at an artefact and receive immediate contextual information without scanning anything. Artificial intelligence identifies sculptures, inscriptions and architectural fragments through computer vision. Large language models answer follow-up questions in natural conversation. Augmented reality reconstructs ruined temples in three dimensions. Personalisation engines recommend customised visitor routes according to age, available time, interests and accessibility requirements.

This is where the gap begins to widen. The Bhuleshwar initiative still depends on a sequence that has remained largely unchanged for more than a decade. Locate the QR code. Open the camera. Scan the code. Load the webpage. Choose the language. Press play. Continue walking. Repeat.
International heritage design increasingly removes many of those steps altogether. Computer vision can recognise the temple itself. Indoor positioning determines visitor location automatically. Artificial intelligence understands spoken questions. The experience becomes conversational rather than instructional. A visitor standing before Bhuleshwar's intricate stone carvings should be able to ask, "Why are female warriors sculpted here?" or "How does this temple differ from Hoysala architecture?" or "Show me where the oldest inscription is located."
The present system speaks. The next generation listens. Equally significant is the question of accessibility. Audio narration undoubtedly benefits many visitors, particularly those unfamiliar with the monument. Inclusive heritage now extends considerably further. Modern digital interpretation increasingly incorporates Indian Sign Language, live captioning, adjustable reading levels, colour-blind friendly interfaces, dyslexia support, tactile integration for blind visitors, multilingual speech synthesis and adaptive narration tailored to children, researchers or casual tourists. ASI has begun introducing Indian Sign Language content at selected monuments, reflecting welcome progress, although comprehensive accessibility remains a work in progress across the network.

Another limitation concerns analytics. The present QR infrastructure can reveal how many visitors activated an audio guide. It cannot easily explain where visitors became confused. Which sculptures generated the greatest curiosity? Which narratives were abandoned halfway? Which monuments attracted repeat engagement? Which languages required expansion? Which stories encouraged visitors to explore additional monuments?

The world's leading museums increasingly rely on anonymous behavioural analytics to refine exhibitions continuously. Heritage interpretation becomes a living system rather than a fixed recording. Artificial intelligence also offers extraordinary possibilities for India's archaeological wealth.

Imagine pointing a phone towards a weathered Sanskrit inscription and receiving immediate transliteration, translation and historical commentary. Imagine reconstructing collapsed mandapas through augmented reality. Imagine comparing Bhuleshwar's sculptural motifs with Ellora, Pattadakal and Khajuraho in real time. Imagine a student asking an AI guide why Yadava architecture evolved differently from Chalukyan forms and receiving a scholarly yet accessible explanation grounded in archaeological evidence.
These are no longer speculative technologies. Many already exist in museums, research institutions and cultural laboratories around the world. The ASI therefore faces an enviable opportunity. Because India's nationwide digital rollout remains relatively young, it has the chance to leapfrog incremental upgrades and move directly towards AI-enabled cultural infrastructure. Instead of viewing QR codes as the endpoint, they can become merely one entry point within a broader digital ecosystem.
Such a roadmap could include computer vision instead of mandatory QR scanning, multilingual conversational AI guides, digital twins of endangered monuments, augmented reality reconstruction, APIs for researchers, downloadable educational modules for schools, accessibility-first interfaces, semantic search across archaeological collections, authenticated QR infrastructure to reduce fraud risks, and open cultural datasets that encourage universities and technology companies to develop complementary heritage applications.

None of these recommendations diminish the achievement represented by Bhuleshwar's new audio guide.

Quite the opposite. The initiative demonstrates that the Archaeological Survey of India increasingly recognises digital interpretation as an essential component of conservation rather than an optional public relations exercise. The institution deserves credit for replacing passive tourism with structured storytelling and for bringing monuments beyond metropolitan museums into India's digital heritage network.

History, however, rarely rewards institutions that stop after their first successful innovation. The QR code transformed museums during the previous technological era. Artificial intelligence, spatial computing and immersive digital interpretation are shaping the next one.

Bhuleshwar Temple therefore represents something more significant than the launch of another audio guide. It marks the moment India arrives at the starting line of a race that much of the global museum community has already been running for years. Whether the country merely catches up or ultimately defines the next generation of digital heritage will depend upon what the Archaeological Survey of India builds after the QR code.
